BRING HIM IN!

The Cleveland Scene article is now on news stands. Those who live outside the region can read it here.
When detectives review a cold case, they look for coincidences and patterns that link a suspect to the crime. They know that, in life, there are no coincidences-only circumstantial evidence. While there are other suspects that can be linked to Amy's abduction by one or two coincidences, no one comes close to Runkle, who is linked to the crime by 5 or 6 pieces of circumstancial evidence, not the least of which is an eyewitness who recognizes his features. I feel confident that if the Cuyahoga County prosecutors put this man in front of a jury, they would convict him of Amy Mihaljevic's murder, especially if that case is tried by someone as experienced as Steve Dever.
At the end of the day, you have to ask yourself, why did this man, a former teacher of the year, suddenly quit teaching and travel as far from Bay Village as you can get without leaving the country, in order to live out of a homeless shelter? What drives a man to act that way.
Decide for yourself. My mind is made up.
Indict this man, please.

***If anyone has more pictures of Runkle from the Lake Erie Nature and Science Center or remembers him being there or talking about the place, please contact me at the email above, at work at 216-802-7235 or contact the FBI or Bay Village Police***

UPDATE: Other papers and journalists have started to weigh in. Click the name to go to their stories.

***Scene Update on 1984 Vermilion attempted abduction link to Runkle (second item down).

***One more thing...*** Seems to me, the response is pretty evenly divided: half that are thanking me for sharing this information and half that want to lynch me for exposing their favorite teacher's darkest secrets. I've been threatened by several of his former students. And that's fine. It goes with the territory. I'm a little more offended by those who say I'm doing this to promote a book. My wife, who has been with me these last three and a half years as I've spent countless hours tracking down witnesses, suspects, and family members, sometimes late into the night and on weekends, would be the first to tell you it's never been about the books, but a search for an answer.
And I would like to point out one thing Runkle's fan club seems to be glossing over: While the case against Amy is mostly circumstantial, we know for sure that he was sending sexual messages to at least one former student in 1989. No, that alone doesn't prove he killed Amy. But it does prove he's not the saint some are portraying him to be.

Hi. I've been subscribed to your blog for awhile but haven't said hello yet. I grew up in Westlake in the 80's & 90's and Amy's kidnapping and murder is something I will never forget. Growing up, my mom was very protective of me and I think the reason is because of what happened to Amy.

A few months ago, I did a search to see what I could find out about her and the case, and I came across your blog. I have been awaiting an update and I am hopeful that her killer will be found.

Anyway, sorry for the long-winded comment, but I wanted to say hello.

That's Dean Runkle all right. "Mr Shaggy." I still hold out hope that he is innocent, but if he guilty of this terrible crime, then he deserves what is coming to him.

Anonymous said...

just because he's a suspect doesn't make him the killer folks, keep an open mind on this one.

Anonymous said...

It does not seem like it has been 19 years. For so many of us from Bay it seems like this event has stood still in time.

I hope you are right and have found the monster who has done this.

The picture is of Runkle. Click on the picture and look at the end of the url.......Runkle.jpg. wow. I guess there was solid evidence weeks ago when his picture was first posted, and then not taken down once identified.

We were classmates in the 5th grade. I can't wait for this to be over.

Anonymous said...

Again.....He is INNOCENT until proven guilty. I am a former student of his and he is by far my FAVORITE teacher ever. I know him better than most of you, and HIGHLY doubt he could be involved in this. Until you have FACTS and a CONVICTION, please stop exposing him for something you don't have proof on.

By the way......Scene Magazine is hardly the leading source in criminal literature

Anonymous said...

I can't believe it. That is Mr. Runkle..he still looks the same just shorter hair. What a creepy man, he was. I know the female students as felt uncomfortable around him. I guess, we will all wait and see.

Anonymous said...

James - is he the lone DNA holdout?

Anonymous said...

Where has he been hiding? Why are they taking so long to arrest him?

Anonymous said...

I also had Mr. Runkle for 8th grade science...his first year teaching at Amherst...and I don't believe a word of this. I read the article in Scene today. I certainly hope all of the accusations printed aren't true, but I also hope that this man's life isn't ruined by an overzealous reporter looking to sell more books. Remember, there are five other men that Mr. Renner said also could have done it...coincidence doesn't equal guilt. Obviously all six suspects didn't do it, yet they all were somehow linked. Five of them are wrongly accused by Mr. Renner on this blog. I do hope that the Mihaljevic family does get closure soon, though. They deserve it.

Hi, I'm a long time reader, first time commenting.
In February 28, 2007, you wrote about your visit to a psychic. In a comment following written by anonymous mentions visiting a psychic also. The psychic asks the question "who is Dana"....so i ask you...could this have meant DEAN or maybe even DAN/////just a thought.
I would suggest going back and re-reading this part...not factual but interesting.

Anonymous said...

Wow James... you have put so much effort into this case, you must feel so relieved to be so close! If you're looking for a new project my family has a 26 year old cold case that still needs solved.

Anonymous said...

Hi,

I would suggest going back to the Feb, 28, 2007 archives "The Reading" and read anonymous's posting in the comments regarding his psychic reading experience....regarding the question "Who is Dana"....could this mean Dean or maybe Dan??? No, it's not fact but it is interesting reading.

Hello James

I have read all the information for years and this has to be the guy, has BVPD or the FBI, had anything to say about you writing this one?

p.s. i also just ordered your new book.

Wow... I have always been interested in this tragic case. Now it's on a completely different level. Dean Runkle was my 8th grade science teacher at Nord Junior High in 1999-2000. While he was a mysterious man who 8th graders loved to make up rumors about, I would never expect this. He was an amazing teacher who truly engaged his students. It breaks my heart to think he could be considered a very real suspect, but if he does turn out to be the person who could do something so evil to such a beautiful, young girl, I hope this case can be brought to a quick close.

Hello,
Just read the Scene article. I am floored and totally sick to my stomach. I had Mr. Runkle in 7th grade at Sailorway Middle school as did my husband and 4 of my very best friends. I don't want to jump on the guilty bandwagon but after reading this article it's hard not to. There seem to be so many things that would link him to Amy's death. Looking at the sketch for one thing just frightens me, I can clearly see him in that picture.

Looking back on him as a teacher, I remember an odd man who everyone seemed to like. I however did not feel the same way about him. I hated his class and stressed every time I had to attend it. He was strict and his material was hard for me to grasp. Other than being called out in class for yawning and resting my head on my hand I never had any real problems. I did also graduate with Dan and will say that he seemed like a nice kid but I remember him as being a favorite of Mr. Runkle.

Anonymous said...

I hope he didn't do it. He was a good man who taught at an inspired level. He was indeed eccentric but good at his heart and was a memorable teacher. I will never forget osmosis and diffusion because of him.

Anonymous said...

Why did Maddie see his photo for the first time on this blog? If he was a top suspect, don't you think the detectives would have shown it to her years ago?

Anonymous said...

I don't understand how you people are so upset over this man being a suspect. EVERYTHING!!!! lines up that it could be him and if it is not him, which I think it is him, he obviously has done something that he needs to be watched.

Hello--thank you for your dedication in finding Amy's killer--living near Bay Village, this is one case that I have not been able to forget all these years and I hope the killer is found and brought to justice for Amy and her family.

I have to say though, reading through the comments, I know a lot of people are upset about Runkle because he was a "favorite teacher", etc....I had a favorite teacher (and he lived in my town--still does) that I had known since 4th grade through high school and really looked up to him and turns out he was taking advantage of and sleeping with underage girls in our school for YEARS (one of them one of my best friends and it really changed her--didn't find out until after graduation and that was when this all came out--he was let go after many years of being a great teacher, no charges were ever brought against him--he WAS a great teacher and we learned a lot from him). This was a shock to me and he was someone I NEVER thought would do such a thing and it saddened me (I spent lots of time with him also and never felt "wierd" or anything)...of course he wasn't a killer but it was bad enough what he did and I just want people to know that you just never know and it's better to get this guy into police custody and find out the truth in case he IS the guy than to let him be free and no one will ever know....I know if Amy was my daughter I don't care if it's a favorite teacher or not, I would want this guy brought in and questioned!!!

didn't the psychic you had seen mention some thing about popeye.Well the one girl called him herself and she said his eye balls poped out when she mention amy to him.

Anonymous said...

does anyone that knows this teacher if he has a tatoo on left arm or some kind of birth mark on his left arm. just wondering

Anonymous said...

if you look at the picture you can see sun catchers hanging. That is what psychic Alice had mention in her reading. Amy must of shown her that picture. Does anyone know if the teacher wore socks with sandals. Also looking at photo it looks like left side of face has marking on it. Looks like scares. Amy had mention to Alice left side marking maybe its a scare not a tattoo.

Hi,
My gutt feeling is this guy has a past, and why hasn't he ever been brought in for questioning, I'd like to know

Abusers have a trail. Think about that.

I'd LOVE for this guy, before he takes the easily way out, go to trial.

My child went to Amherst schools, didn't have him, but went to his classroom to look at snakes.

Bring him in, let's let this poor family have closure.

Anonymous said...

looking back at psychic Alice she had mention cat buried in back yard could that be the cat that was dipped in liquid nitrogen. she also mention who is Steve could that be if case tried by someone expericenced as Steve Dever. also Amy had mention about police badge that could be the investigators from bay village and the FBI know of this man close on arresting him

Anonymous said...

Psychic Alice mention LM i bet it stands for Lorain Morning Journal. it just seems old everything now is making sense. I ask everyone to go back and look at what she said and see what you get out of it. Does anyone one know if blue birds ment anything to teacher Dean Runkle. i think Amy told the psychic more then you think. James you need to go back and see hear again.Maybe she can find out more on this guy.

psychic Alice mention Amy holding a stuff animal. She was showing her the stuff animal meaning Mr Dean Runkle always had stuffed animals every where around the Holiday. Trying to give her a clue by holding stuff animal. She new the kids would know because he always had stuff animals around the Holiday. They really need to take a closer look at this guy.

Psychic Alice mentions in her reading that ...he put her in a box with a plaid blanket....he wanted her to be comforted.

very creepy

Very well written article. It gave me chills reading it! Things are really starting to fall into place... A lot of the things mentioned reminded me of more of his bizarre behavior I had forgotten about. Sure there are two sides to every story, but the people giving you grief for accusing him are a bit much. I know if someone in my family was murdered and discarded the way poor Amy was, I would want someone like you on my side. Every Sunday on my way to St. Raphael's I get chills passing the Nature Center and plaza. You wouldn't believe how popular this case has become with those of us from Amherst. It seems like everyone has something to say about it on FaceBook or MySpace. Keep up the great work, Mr. Renner.
Oh and really, you need to look into WHY the Amherst Schools let him sleep in the classroom. I'd love to hear someone's answer for that!

Anonymous said...

The psychic also said that James tripped at the killer's house. Let's not try to fit square pegs into round holes here.

As weird as this guy is- you can't indict based on weirdness. I would like to get a DNA sample though.

Anonymous said...

I was reading what one person wrote about she had Mr Runkle at Sailorway Middle School. Well going back at Psychis Alice she had mention popeye. Popeye was a Sailor Man. Sailorsway Middle School. To me that also could of been why Amy showed psychic popeye the sailor man. I think she was telling on him more then you think. They should take a closer look on this guy.

Anonymous said...

I watched the BVPD detective on 19news, he didnt seem to happpy about the story,James, have you heard from them?

Anonymous said...

No one cares what a psychic says, whatever she says is baloney. If you are trying to discredit Mr. Renner please show why the evidence doesn't point towards Runkle or that the cases of inappropriate conduct didn't happen. This psychic babble is not useful and has no relation to the case.

I did have Mr. Runkle at Nord. I thought he was a great teacher and I never noticed anything wrong with his behavior. But with the revelations Mr. Renner has presented I now doubt Runkle's innocence. He always said he had some back problem and Runkle claimed he always needed to walk so that the problem wouldn't be aggravated. There were other eccentricities that seem benign and my memory can't recall them well.

His statement makes me doubt his innocence, "I wouldn't be surprised if I was in a picture at the Lake Erie Nature Center, but I'm telling the truth when I say I don't remember being there." That is a denial that tries and fails reconcile with facts.

Lets hope someone can come forward with the last piece of evidence that will finish this investigation.

Anonymous said...

James. Thanks for all your work on this case! Although I am sure the BVPD and the FBI have been working on this case, I believe that your pressure, and publishing these facts will lead to a conviction.

I have followed this case since 1989, read your book, and have discussed this case with many others.

I really hate when people post comments saying "he was a nice guy" and "he would never do that". There have been many "nice guys" that have committed horrible crimes.

I had a teacher that 20 yrs later was convicted of molesting a classmate of mine. No one would have ever suspected it. (He plead guilty - so there is no doubt)

A fried of mine was murdered by a coworker of mine that was a "nice guy". Well... Her blood was on his pants and he plead guilty to her murder. No one suspected him.

This man was a TEACER and he had students in his car? in his house? out to eat with him? I don't care how nice he was, that is crossing a line that should never be crossed between teacher/student. Can you say red flag?

Then his sexual letters to a former student. I don't care if he brought animals to play with in your class, that is an indicator to what he was about.

Here is what I ask of anyone who had him. What did he DO / SAY to you? Tell the police NOW. I am sure this freak has done something to someone else in the past and hopefully he will pay now.

I suspect he will try to run with this news. I hope he is being watched.

Bring him in. Put him on trial, and then and only then we will say he is guilty of the murder of Amy. Until then, he is just a freak that crossed the line several times and his supporters are naive.

I think you have done it Jim. Now I hope the FBI comes through with the apprehension.

This is to the person that said ,who cares about psychics, Mr Renner should get all the credit, and he should get all the credit for what he's done,The psychic would given her really name if she wanted credit. He went to her and there is some things that she said that can tie in with this man of interest. They should try to get a DNA from him if there is nothing to hind.

Mr Renner, you said,Moment in your life cannot explain when grandfather passed, did you get that feeling when you seen Dean for the first time in person face to face. You had to feel something .I think your so close now just hope the BVP steps in and ask for an DNA. Good luck ,Hope this comes to an end and next you help someone elses family.

James, can they go back to Dean Runkles type of car he droveback then. Can you go to the dealer ship and find out what carpet they had used on that car from that year and see if it matches the gold fibers found on Amy. I thought that is done when someone refinshes a car just like how it was built when new. Just a thought. Hope you find what your looking for soon 19 years is to long for the creep that did that to Amy. She didn't deserve to die. He had cheated her life and with her family.

Given the recent rash of attempted abductions in Bay Village this summer (well, two that I heard about), is Bay a particularly appealing spot for this type of crime? Are surrounding suburbs experiencing the same thing? There was an alarming program on cable a few weeks ago about abductions for sex rings. It was disgusting and one of the highlighted criminals was from Toledo. The world just seems to be getting more dangerous all the time.

Does anyone know the name of Mr. Runkle's twin sister that died at age 6? Could it have been Dana?

Anonymous said...

Possibly the pets at school at names.
If so "Popeye" could be a pet name at
Sailorway school.

Anonymous said...

I would think if BVP has not gotten a DNA from Runkle, that they should. I don't understand why they have brought him in, taken the DNA. What are they waiting for?

I do believe that without your imput on this case, the police would have let this go unanswered. I think you hit a nerve with the detective. If you were off track, I don't think he would have cared so much about your recent story.

Jonathan said...

I agree with the idea of tracking down an old Grand Prix of similar year and same color interior, grabbing some carpet fibers and comparing to those found on Amy's body. If they were found to be similar, that would certainly be some compelling evidence.

Anonymous said...

james renner has not presented any facts. he just proved that mr runkle was different. and alot of the people he spoke to have not been around runkle for along time and who is to say thier memories of this man are accurate. lets the police do their job

Anonymous said...

I am sure the FBI has a database of fibers from different cars.

The thing that makes me wonder is why is the BV police so upset over this article? They have had 19 years and have done nothing. Are they upset because you have outed their #1 suspect??

Forensic technology has improved so much in the past 19 years, I am sure the FBI can match DNA and fibers found.

If the BV police was taking DNA samples from suspects then there must be DNA evidence on Amy they have collected. So why haven't they done more with this??

It is time for the BVPD and the FBI to be more vocal and let us know they are really working on this, instead if just giving the cliché answer of "the case is still open".

Anonymous said...

Hey, does any one know where Dean's sister is buried at. I know you can't say he down it yet,but if he did I sure would be scared that they are getting closer. It really is a shame it would of took 19 years to catch this guy. If he is 65 years old he figures he lived his life. I hate to tell him ,wait whats waiting for him on the other side.

Anonymous said...

To the responses regarding the BVPD, is it possible that they are a small town PD and don't know how to properly handle a high profile murder case? It is my opinion that they may not and when someone else comes along with information, they don't act on it because they don't know how. And then they get angry. It's been 19 years, why hasn't it been solved. Why? Technology has improved enough that these details James has brought to light should have been uncovered by law enforcement.

Anonymous said...

I have been reading the comments in the local newspaper and former students of his cannot seem to understand that while he might have been the "great" teacher that they remember, it is possible for good and bad to exist within the same person...
His odd behaviors of sleeping in the school, socializing with his students, ages 13-14, transporting them in his vehicle to lunches as well to his apartment are all totally inappropriate for someone in the position of a teacher.
Those things do not make him a murderer, of course, but they should have raised a red flag to parents and administrators.

Anonymous said...

James,
Do not be discouraged, if not you, who else would be keeping this case alive and waking up the memories of those that could help in this investigation. To the individual out there that has some knowledge regarding a suspect in this case PLEASE, come forward, you may be saving a future victim. Doing the right thing is liberating, do not worry about being judged as you too are a victim. To be silent is to enable. You have a chance to help, please do not turn away from this responsibility. It's OK to be honest. It is what you must do.

i think james renner wants to solve this case then try to make a movie about it. i talked to people he spoke to and they say he is even more weird than mr runkle. this probably won't get put in the blog though cause he edits them. you cant believe everything you read people

TB said...

James-
Regarding your comments about people accusing you of doing this to promote your book...the problem I have is that in EVERYTHING you have written on this case- you always say that you would never use a suspect's name because they haven't been charged. Why the sudden change now with Runkle? No one is questioning your passion- but it strikes me as odd that someone as credible as you would completely out someone who has never been officially charged. You might as well just put the names of all of the other suspects out there as well- who is Brad Harvey?

Anonymous said...

Does anyone ever answer the question. When you make your coments. I been reading them every day and not yet one answered any of question. Why is that. I have even notice James never answers back too. Just wondering why.Isn't this supose to help everyone think things out.

Anonymous said...

When the psychic asked the question, "Who is Dana" Counld she have meant "Dianna?" Runkles twin sister that died was named Dianna..

Anonymous said...

James,

This is a serious issue. Serious because it involves an unsolved brutal murder of a child and serious because it involves ruining what very easily could be an innocent man's life. I don't think you should be fanning the flames of conflict by glibly referring to many of Mr. Runkle's former students as the "Runkle Fan Club." It's serious business.

Anonymous said...

This just in. James Renner supposedly smoked marijuana 15 years ago.

Coincidentally, some people that smoke pot go onto other, more serious drugs.

Conclusion-James Renner does heroin.

See how silly that looks???

I have a question, If Dean Runkle don't give a DNA. Can the police or FBI get one from him drinking out of a glass when he throws it away. I was wondering if they can do this. It really upsets me to see these comments about Mr. Renner on her and the Morning Journal. James drove all the way out to my house, (which let me say is quite a drive) to pick something up that had to do with Amy. This in no way helped his book sales or bank account. He did it because he cares. And as for his character, he is not strange at all and actually a very good person. Because he took the time to care and move this case along, (sacraficing his personal free time for the case) when no one else would, he is being slandered. Shame on all of you. Would you rather leave this to a Police department that has let this case sit cold for almost 20 years? I am sure Amy is so thankful for the dedication Mr. Renner has shown to achieving justice for her and her family. Thank you James, and I am so sorry that your work is not receiving gratitude. I was so relieved when I moved back to Ohio and saw that this case was finally moving along. I wondered about it all the time.

James,

I grew up around the corner from Amy, and I was friends with Jason in elementary/middle school.

As someone that has lived the horror of this case first hand (as many Clevelanders have), I really appreciate that youi have brought her case back to the headlines.

That being said, I beg you to be more careful with this case. I know many people only see this case as a "cold" case, but the fact is it is still open and being actively investigated. Accusations, whether they wind up being true or not, are still just that - accusations.

The BV police and the FBI all have very personal ties to this case. They want to see it solved just as much as you and I, but you are coming dangerously close to putting this guy behind bars and throwing away the key without letting the police and the FBI do their job.

Again, I want you to know how much I appreciate you and your dedication to Amy. We all hope and pray to see an end to this nightmare someday (soon) - I know I do.

I definitely respect the work Mr. Renner has done on this case. But I think he's let emotion overcome him in publishing Mr. Runkle's name. I really think this should have been left to law enforcement.

Anonymous said...

For years Mr. Renner has run a fine blog but I do think his decision to post Runkle's name and current location crosses a line both ethically and possibly legally. I wish he would have used a pseudonym as he has for past suspects. I've been thinking about the Amy case since I was six and I hope they find her killer, be it Runkle or someone else; but to conclude it was Runkle in absence of a court trial (let alone a conviction) we run the risk doing a disservice to many and potentially ruining a good man's reputation. DKK

Laura said...

This message is for "tb". You have it wrong. Mr. Renner said he was not going to use Brad Harvey's name because he did not consent to an interview NOT because he has not been formally charged in this investigation.

Wow James, your new revelation about the 1984 police report sure is the smoking gun. Do you realize how foolish this is starting to look??? Let the police do their job and stop slandering people. Do you want people to start looking at your entire life with a magnifying glass????

I agree his name should not be posted until he is charged by the police. There are 5 to 6 strong suspects. Some of these men have been draged thru the mud unfairly. I do think It is possible 1 of the 6 did this horrible act but lets wait until we have all of the evidence.

We all have a relatives or friends who have mental illness or may not fit into the Bay Village mold. Nothing has been proven in court yet.

Having read all the research done by James Renner there does seem to be some striking connections. While all that is true that thing that keeps coming back over and over is......why no other connection to any other missing child/murder?

We have seen over and over in situations like these a person who does this strikes not just once but several times. This was 19 years ago why no other child was ever abducted and linked to him. In all the comments made not one person male or female who had him as a student has ever said he tried to lure them to here or there. That seems so strange.

Guess it comes down to me....Why Amy Mihaljevic and only Amy Mihaljevic? what did she say or do, how did she act etc. that would have made this person act in this way that for all the years before he never did and for past 19 years he has never done since.

That is what naws at me. While James Renner appears to have done so much research and puts forth a compelling case it just seems so unbelieveable Dean Runkle could have done this but for the all the rest of his 60+ years he never hurt a person. This just does not make sense to me.

Anonymous said...

How can you be so sure that the person who committed this crime has NEVER harmed anyone before? I cannot understand how anyone could make this assumption. Absent of public knowledge does not make someone innocent. Again, I encourage "YOU" who have information, to please come forward. Do not be concerned what others may think, ask for help, to be at peace with yourself there is no other choice. God bless you and may he give you the courage to follow this path. It will free you.

Anonymous said...

It is possible that Runkle did not intend on killing the little girl. Maybe she put up some resistance at the last minute and he acted spontaneously. Maybe he didn't even realize he was strong enough to actually kill anyone regardless of their size. Not saying he did it and naming him was surely uncalled for, but now that we know he is possibly related to this case we should really think back about clues that he may have given us that say maybe he could have. And maybe after that happened, he tried extra hard to be nice so that if his name ever came up people would stand up for him like we are seeing. Or, it is possible he really felt remorse and tried to give as much as he could to kids to kind of "make up for it" but there is no making up for taking somebodys child away from them.i personally don't believe that runkle did it, but his unusual behavior and bizzare ways have led many to believe he could have, including the police

Anonymous said...

One of my questions is - why stab her? This is even a gruesome thought but she was smaller and there could have been other ways - but why the brutality that comes with stabbing?

Anonymous said...

My exact thoughts, Anony 11/22 at 11:02...

The fact that an individual has not been arrested/convicted for committing more crimes of the same nature means nothing - it could simply mean that they were not caught! Think of the many murderers in recent years, who, when finally caught, admitted to committing many, many "unsolved" murders.

Even more bizarre is (many of) Runkle's former students' defense of him as a dedicated teacher, etc., as if that fact alone proves that he could not be a murderer. One fact has nothing to do with the other...

Could not someone be a wonderful, dedicated doctor, nurse, CEO, etc., but also be a drug addict or an abusive spouse? Of course they could!

I think Mr Renner has done his research well and puts forth a very compelling case. Some have said he should not name the person as they have not been charged etc. How many times have we all heard a name and had it explained they are a person of interest or they are the prime suspect, etc. Their is nothing wrong with putting a name to the facts coming forth. Its merely an acknowledgement that the facts point toward this person.

Those who say the name should not be mentioned would be the first to comment if police knew a person in their neighborhood who was dangerous and the police chose not to tell the neighbors his name....they would be screaming from the highest hill why won't the police tell the name of the person who is dangerous in our neighborhood.

I also know if Runkle was only identified as Mr X that in the small community of Vermilion or Amherst folks would spend all their waking hours trying to find out who Mr X was. Then 5+ names would all be circulating around the communities.....gossip would have all kinds of people in town implicated.

Personally, if all this situation would have happen to me I would clearly return from Florida where Runkle currently is currently living and I would do whatever it took to clear my name. The very fact he continues to live in the shadows and carries this mystic about him only serves to fuel the fires of more mystery. To me get out of the Florida hideaway and get back to Ohio and get this all out in the open and say I have had enough and I am going to clear my name.

I have no idea who did the brutal act but the very fact James Renner is getting closer and closer to the truth the real murderer has to be getting very uneasy. After all these years of probably assuming its a mute issue it is now again on the front burner and this time the case may finally be solved. Whoever the guilty person is will be facing life in prison or a possible death sentence. That can make people act very irrationally and so many times in the stress of it all they make the fatal mistake or slip-up.

Its going to very interesting how this plays out over the the next few weeks.

just a thought, the psychic had mention about a tube and draining her blood. Come to think of it science classes work with tubes, blood, things that are living and dead. They seem to know and work like a funeral director. They have the same chemicals. It just a thought. Where is the DNA when you need it.Whats taking so long at least he wouldn't have to hide any more if he is proven not guilty.

The amount of circumstantial evidence against Dean Runkle is definitely compelling.

But "innocent until proven guilty" and I would hesitate to convict him without some sort of physical evidence, if I was on his jury.
And to all of the people who are defending this person because they remember him as a nice guy: Anyone who studies true crime cases knows that the central characteristics of pedophiles, rapists, and serial killers is the ability to appear "normal," as in glib, charming, and likeable.

Question for Mr. Renner: I wonder if Mr. Runkle's childhood showed any of the three indicators of psychopathology that are known as the "Macdonald triad," i.e., bedwetting, cruelty to animals and fire-starting?
